There was e there were: como se diz «havia»

QECR A2

O que vais aprender

  • Reconhecer there was e there were em exemplos breves de nível A2.
  • Aplicar there was e there were a evidência visual explícita sem copiar um modelo resolvido.
  • Justificar as três respostas com a regra e a evidência visível.

A ideia

Se já sabes there is e there are, isto é meia unidade: muda o verbo e mais nada. There was a school here. There were two schools here.

Plural, were. There was a lot of noise. There were a lot of people.

E é a única forma de dizer «havia» a falar de existência. Não serve it was, que descreve algo já conhecido, nem had, que é ter. There was a problem, nunca «It had a problem».

A negativa e a pergunta funcionam como com qualquer to be no passado: There wasn't any bread. There weren't any eggs. Was there a party? Were there many people? E a resposta curta repete o verbo: Yes, there was. No, there weren't.

In my grandmother's house there was a big kitchen and there were three bedrooms.

E completa-se com mais duas formas de que vais precisar em breve: para o futuro, there will be, que não muda com singular nem com plural; e com modais, there might be ou there should be. Em todas elas o verbo que segue there é sempre be, sem conjugar.

Como soa

  • There was a cinema on this street twenty years ago.Um cinema, singular: was.
  • There were a lot of people at the concert.People é plural mesmo não acabando em -s: were.
  • There wasn't any milk in the fridge.
  • Were there many students in your class?
  • There will be a meeting tomorrow.

  1. Usa esta imagem

Introduce the single fountain in the old square.

There was one fountain. — O grupo singular one fountain seleciona there was.

  2. Usa esta imagem

Introduce the two trees in the old square.

There were two trees. — O grupo plural two trees seleciona there were.

  3. Usa esta imagem

No cars appear anywhere in the square. Choose the past existential negative.

There weren't any cars.

There was a table and four chairs in the room.
  • Com there não se usa did para nada, nem na negativa nem na pergunta: é to be e desenrasca-se sozinho. There wasn't a bus. (no «There didn't be a bus»)
  • No inglês falado ouve-se there was com plural quando a frase vai contraída. Percebe-se, mas por escrito considera-se um erro. There's two people waiting. (hablado; escrito: There are two people waiting.)
There used to be a bakery on the corner.

O que a tua língua te empurra a dizer

Diz-se mal Had a lot of people at the party.

Diz-se bem There were a lot of people at the party.
