There is e there are: come si dice «c'è»

QCER A1

Che cosa imparerai

  • Riconoscere there is e there are in esempi brevi.
  • Scegliere una forma di there is e there are da un'evidenza visiva esplicita.

L'idea

There is a park near my house. There are two cinemas in my town.

Se è plurale, are. There is a chair. There is milk in the fridge. There are three chairs.

There isn't any bread. There aren't any eggs. Is there a bank near here? Are there any questions? E si risponde corto: Yes, there is. No, there aren't.

Quando elenchi più cose e la prima è singolare, l'inglese parlato usa is, perché comanda ciò che viene subito dopo: There is a table and four chairs.

There were a lot of people at the concert.

Come suona

  • There is a supermarket at the end of the street.Dopo c'è a supermarket, singolare: is.
  • There are twenty students in my class.Students è plurale, quindi are.
  • There isn't any sugar in my coffee.
  • Are there any shops near the hotel?Nella domanda, are si mette davanti a there.
  • There were a lot of people at the station.People è plurale, quindi al passato vuole were.

Ora tocca a te

  1. Usa questa immagine

Choose the sentence that matches the single table.

There is one table in the room. — One table è singolare: si usa there is.

  2. Usa questa immagine

Choose the sentence that matches the chairs.

There are two chairs in the room. — Two chairs è plurale: si usa there are.

  3. Usa questa immagine

Are there three closed books on the table?

Yes, there are.

There is a sofa, two chairs and a lamp in the living room.
  • There is si contrae in there's, ma there are quasi mai si contrae per iscritto. There's a message for you.
There is a bank over there.
Ana is in the kitchen. (no «There is Ana in the kitchen»)

Si dice male It is a park near my house.

Si dice bene There is a park near my house.

Ma it is descrive qualcosa di già noto (It is a nice park), mentre there is lo presenta per la prima volta.
